July 16, 2008 By: webadmin Category: Board Meetings

CAHA Board meeting reminder:  All are welcome and encouraged to attend the board meeting, tomorrow, Thursday, July 17 at 8pm at Schroeder’s (Como and Dale).

Minutes from June’s meeting (2008)

Meeting Minutes CAHA                                                                June 26, 2008

Members present: Bob Skweres, Mike McCullough, Dennis Greeley, Monica Hoekstra Weyandt, Deb Klein, Kathy Weyandt, Leann Kopic, Julia Fish, Cara Debes, Mike Schinzing, Robb LaChappelle, Lisa McClellan, Gina Kray, Dick Weyandt

Board Members present:Christine Greeley, Jeff Vik, Tracie Krause

Approval of the May minutes: Motion made by Bob Skweres and seconded by Mike Schinzing, carried to accept.

Treasurer’s report: $9,853.40 in checkbook, have yet to collect $4,184.84 from last season.

Vice-President report: Chris went to online registration meeting, every hockey person (coaches, players) in MN needs to be registered; coaches will have to pay the fee online and be reimbursed by CAHA; can use credit cards to pay the fees for USA hockey.

President report: no report

Old Business: All spots are taken for the CAHA team for the Mighty Kids golf tournament - money earned from this tournament goes to associations to help families who receive free or reduce lunches, it helps pay for hockey fees up to $150 per kid at any level of play. Mighty Kids is writing a grant to NHL Player’s Association to request 10 sets of equipment for CAHA.
New Business: Mandatory Volunteer Policy - everybody has to pitch in to make CAHA run efficiently; a family can accomplish their responsibilities in a variety of ways, one time or over the course of the year. Hourly hours will be tallied on a hourly basis. Committee hours will be credited upon completion of committee obligations; the goal of CAHA is to have the jobs for the year laid out at registration so people can sign up and plan their time; the biggest thing we can do as an association is to step up fundraising to keep fees at a reasonable level, use spaghetti dinner, tournaments, calendars, clothing, etc. to raise money; all jobs should keep track of how many hours it takes to run each event to get an idea of how long it takes to complete doing that job. CAHA needs to get a corporate sponsorship committee going ASAP. Discussion ended and a motion was made by Bob Skweres, seconded by Gina Kray, the mandatory volunteer policy was carried to accept by a quorum of CAHA members.

Clothing - if we want new jerseys for 2008 - 2009 season they have to be ordered by August 1 at a cost of $4000 per team with the jerseys being purchased by sponsors - the jerseys will be for Squirts to Bantam levels; would like to get good quality jerseys that can be used for more years; also, there is a need for sponsors at all levels.

Equipment storage - CAHA is currently storing pallets of pull tabs at a cost of $89/month on a month to month contract.

Registration dates for 2008 - 2009 season will be August 19, September 9 and September 30. All registration will be done at North Dale Rec Center with times yet to be determined.

The next meeting will be July 17, 2008 at Schroeder’s Bar at 8:00 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Mighty Kids Golf Tourney: July 11th, Friday 10:00am

June 12, 2008 By: webadmin Category: Fundraising, SuperMites, Mites

To all CAHA members:

Mighty Kids is sponsoring a golf tournament fundraiser. Please see the attached sheets. If anyone can put together a foursome or could play as an individual it will greatly help. Last year the tournament only filled 13 of the 18 available foursomes. That meant that $1000.00 in entry fees was not realized (and reduced the amount available for scholarship disbursement). It would be great if this year all 18 foursomes could be filled. It is a great event with the chance to win cash and prizes (longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt, beat the course pro on a hole, etc…). The lunch is fantastic and almost everyone gets a door prize of some type. The golf tournament is 9 holes, starts at 10AM and with lunch & the awards program lasts until around 2PM (leaving plenty of time for those of you with cabins to get up North!). It will be on Friday, July 11, 2008. The $50 entry fee includes green fees, cart, lunch and prizes.

The money that is raised by the Mighty Kids golf tournament is used to directly reimburse the three local St. Paul hockey associations (Como, East Side/Johnson, & Highland.) Last year Como itself received $2880.00 in direct scholarship reimbursements. The money we (Como) receive in scholarships directly effects how successful we are in recruiting new players & parents into the association. Whatever support any individuals or businesses can provide to the Mighty Kids program will be greatly appreciated. It will also allow Como to build on our success last season recruiting new members. If anyone’s business or employer could donate money or door prizes please let Tom Moriarty know.

In addition this year Como Area Hockey will be sponsoring its own 4 person team for the tournament. If you are interested in playing on the Como team please email Mike Schinzing by June 25, 2008 (mike@hamerinc.com) or leave a voicemail at 651-489-8058 along with a contact phone number and email. He will place Como Area Hockey Assn members on the team in the order they respond (first to signup/contact him, first on the team until we get 4 members, then it is closed). Once the team is filled he will notify all who have responded. Should the team not be filled by June 25th then the board will pick members at the June 26, 2008 meeting. This should not preclude anyone from setting up their own team. As stated above Mighty Kids wants to fill all the foursomes and maximize the amount raised. So if you want, get your friends to join you as well for a day of fun and sun.

If you have any questions please email Mike Schinzing at the address above.

Open Letter from the CAHA Board to All Parents/Guardians

May 29, 2008 By: webadmin Category: Bylaws, 10UB Girls, Bantams, PeeWees, SuperMites, Squirts, Mites

Thursday, May 29, 2008

Dear Association Member,

We would like to inform you of a special meeting taking place on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 7 pm.  We will be voting on the proposed Mandatory Volunteerism Policy (see attached).  All Association members are encouraged to attend this meeting.

By way of introduction to this proposed policy, we would like to remind you that the Como Area Hockey Association is an organization run by volunteers.  Its membership consists of the parents of its players.  If you are a parent or guardian of a hockey player, you are a member of this association. Volunteerism is essential to making this a quality organization – your efforts are important and appreciated.

We understand that you are busy and committed parents/caregivers, and we are not trying to make your lives more complicated than they already are.  We are simply looking to streamline, strengthen, and build morale within our organization by distributing a reasonable amount of the workload to many, versus an unmanageable amount to a few.   Let us all remember that in the end, this is about our children, our hockey community and what it takes to make CAHA a fiscally sound and viable organization.  It is about creating an environment in which every player and Association member can take ownership and show pride.

Nearly every hockey association has long since adopted such a mandatory volunteerism policy.  Hockey organizations simply cannot sustain themselves without this level of commitment, and in the case of inner-city hockey, such involvement is particularly critical.

This proposed policy represents a new direction for CAHA, and there are always growing pains associated with such a major change.  We ask that you be patient with the process and encourage you to be a positive influence on it.  If you have never attended an Association meeting, you are strongly encouraged to do so.  Meetings take place upstairs at Schroeder’s (corner of Front, Dale and Como) at 7pm on the third Thursday (generally) of each month.  This is a time to familiarize yourself with the organization and articulate your comments and concerns.  Please use discretion when contacting Board members outside of meetings.  The third Thursday of each month is the time to conduct hockey business. PLEASE NOTE: Though many volunteer opportunities will be made available closer to registration, we are in IMMEDIATE NEED of volunteers in several key areas.  Please attend the June meeting if you have ANY interest in the following positions:

1) Corporate Sponsorship Chair and committee members 2) Spaghetti Dinner Chair and committee members The Corporate Sponsorship Chair will be responsible for organizing a committee of CAHA members to secure financial support from local businesses.

Corporate support will be key to our overall financial health this year, since we no longer have a Lawful Gambling License.  In the past, revenue from our Lawful Gambling efforts accounted for approximately $30,000 of our operating budget.  Filling that void or exceeding that amount will be the primary goal of the Corporate Sponsorship Committee.  The sooner we have a reasonable expectation of those numbers, the sooner we can establish our fee structure for the upcoming season.  The Spaghetti Dinner Chair will be responsible for organizing a committee of CAHA members to plan details of our first formal fundraising event of the season.  Ideally, this committee should be established by mid-summer in order to allow adequate organizational time to produce a good product.

Please let us know about the above opportunities or any other area where you may want to help.  The next few meetings offer a chance to best match your interests and skills with the Association’s most pressing needs. It is in every-one’s best interest to plan volunteerism early!

We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting,  Como Area Hockey Association Board of Directors
